HEI Distributor Upgrade for Classic Mustangs & Camaros
By Ponyparts Hub · August 4, 2026
Points ignition is period-correct — and a common source of misfires, hard starts, and weekend tune-ups. An HEI distributor (or HEI-style electronic upgrade) is one of the highest-ROI ignition searches for classic Mustangs and first-gen Camaros.
Why enthusiasts switch
- Stronger spark at idle and higher RPM
- No points gap to file every few months
- Easier cold starts with a healthy coil setup
- Wide aftermarket support for curve kits and modules
Concours cars may keep points. Drivers and restomods almost always go electronic.
Mustang vs Camaro shopping
Camaro / SBC (327–350): “Small-block Chevy HEI” listings are everywhere. Confirm cap clearance under the hood and whether you want an internal-coil HEI or an external-coil electronic distributor.
Mustang / Windsor (289–302): Ford-specific electronic distributors and conversion kits are the correct path — don't force a Chevy HEI onto a Ford block. Match shaft, gear, and vacuum advance to your engine.

What to replace with the distributor
- Plug wires (correct length and boot angles)
- Spark plugs gapped for your tune
- Coil (if external)
- Often the ballast resistor wiring strategy — follow the kit instructions so you don't underfeed or cook the coil
Weak fuel delivery still feels like an ignition problem. If the car bogs with a new dizzy, revisit the carburetor and fuel tank.
After install: set timing properly
Electronic ignition doesn't excuse a wild initial advance. Use a timing light, set initial timing to a sensible street baseline, then verify total mechanical advance. Vacuum advance cans should be connected as intended for cruise economy and throttle response.
Wiring and harness notes
If under-dash or engine-bay wiring is brittle, fix that first — see our wiring harness warning signs. A new distributor on a fried harness is just a prettier misfire.
A clean ignition system makes every other performance part feel sharper. Start here if your classic still smells like burnt points.
